エリックは、まず図形の中に円を描く計算幾何学の手法を使って折り線を導き、さらにどの順番で折り線を入れていけばすべての図形を一つの線上に乗せられるかのアルゴリズムを編み出した。これによって、「紙を折りたたみ、一回切るだけで、どんな多角形でも無限に作れる」ということを証明したのだ。

オリガミ数学に詳しい北陸先端科学技術大学院大学准教授の上原隆平は「かなりの種類の形が作れるだろうと言われてきたが、限界がないことを数学的に証明するのは非常に難しかった」と話す。

本当にどんな形でも切り出せるのだろうか。でこぼこのでたらめな六角形を紙に描いて、エリックに渡してみた。

エリックは鼻歌を歌いながら紙を折って筋を入れ、開いては閉じて……を繰り返し、最後に折りたたんだ。

笑いながら「Moment of truth（真実の時）！」と言ってはさみで切り離した。紙を開くと、まさに書いたとおりの形が現れた。この間、約2分。
